For two or three years there has been a really loud popping noise coming from somewhere in my room at totally arbitrary times. It's fucking annoying and even though it's happened hundreds of times it still scares the shit out of me. But the worst part was not knowing what it was... I'm a very curious person and if I hear about anything I don't understand I look it up as soon as I can... But I couldn't look this up and it drove me mad!
Well after all this time I have finally discovered the source! It's this:
I know what you're thinking; 'That's just a jar of purple liquid' Well you're quite right. It's methylated spirit, which is used to clean bass guitar strings.
For the first time ever I happened to be looking in the general direction of this jar, which lives on my windowsill, when the noise went off, and I saw the lid move! Presumably changing temperatures cause the metal to expand/contract until it reaches a point where the centre pops up or down (kind of like the test to see if a jar has been opened - the centre of the lid should be up if unopened.)
I'm well aware that nobody gives a shit about this apart from me, but I don't even care!
Today is a good day.

I'm so very happy for you. my sister told me that sometimes when I'm away she hears knocking coming from my room, and a couple of nights ago I heard it. so that's scary. I also have a giant african land snail and he makes squealing noises against the tank sometimes for shits and giggles, and it's terrifying in the middle of the night.
Well bloody cool that you figured it out. Very interesting too, that it would do that. I can still see the physicist in you, mate..
=O =O =O I care!
i'm glad you found the source of the mysterious popping. and i am glad it wasn't a pipe bomb. (sorry for that very lame joke)
